STATEMENT

I am intrigued by the human behaviour that is affected or influenced by violence, and may even proliferate it, either knowingly or unknowingly. With the understanding of Abject, I try to critique it in various ways through my work.

I am very influenced by the surrounding - what human species see around them, what they acknowledge, and what they are indifferent towards. My work mostly draws what's around me to generate a narrative which shows the vehemence and an ambivalent state, that I have witnessed and felt, that is somehow universal.  The imageries I create tend to objectify human bodies and its fragments that are subjecting to the violence. The repetition/obsession in the process intensifies the image-making leaning towards the visibility and invisibility of the matter.

My work intertwines with the polarity of the material and the subject. It is the ambiguous liminal space of jouissance and horror. I mostly play with contrasts like Innocence and grotesque, Pain and pleasure, sadism and masochism as I think it would have a more significant impact on confronting and conveying my perspective to the viewer.

The purpose of my work is the narration of emotions through the exploration of the possibilities of the medium. The practice has evolved with the process of making with a range of media like sketchbooks, textiles, photography and ceramics. The colours and materials I use tend to undermine the inherent violence of the subjects. The sensitivity and the intensity of the subject matter somehow reflect in the selection of the materials.
